MIAMI -- The Washington Nationals comeback victory against Jose Fernandez felt well-deserved, even if the pivotal runs were unearned. Cheap New Balance Shoes . Jayson Werth hit a tying three-run homer off Fernandez after Miami Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia committed two errors in the sixth inning, and the Nationals went on to win 6-3 Wednesday night. "Tonight was good for us against a really tough pitcher," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "Hes an animal, one of the best pitchers in all of baseball." After the Nationals overcame a 3-0 deficit, pinch-hitter Zach Walters broke a tie in the eighth inning with his second career homer -- and his second in as many nights. Washington took the rubber game of the three-game series despite being without four starters, including Bryce Harper, a late scratch because of a tight left quadriceps that has bothered him since Friday. Harper is expected to be back in the lineup Thursday when the Nationals begin an 11-game homestand against St. Louis. Fernandez, betrayed by his defence, departed for a pinch-hitter after seven innings. He allowed four hits and three runs, all unearned, with 10 strikeouts and no walks. The Marlins precocious ace allowed only one baserunner in the first five innings, but Saltalamacchias throwing error put runners at first and third with nobody out in the sixth. Fernandez retired the next two batters before Werth stepped to the plate. "I thought Jose was going to pitch himself out of that," Miami manager Mike Redmond said. "He made some great pitches, then just made a mistake and the guy hit it out." Werths homer, his third of the season, tied the score at 3. "I got beat," Fernandez said of his matchup with Werth. "Its part of the game. Obviously not what I wanted to happen, but we learn from it." Walters led off the eighth with the Nationals first pinch-hit homer this year, which came against Mike Dunn (0-2). That raised Walters slugging percentage to 2.000. "Luck of the draw," the rookie said of his fast start. Ian Desmond added a two-run single. Tanner Roark allowed three runs in 6 1-3 innings, and the bullpen pitched the final 2 2-3 innings without allowing a runner. Drew Storen (1-0) got the final two outs in the seventh, and Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his third save in as many chances. Washington improved to 5-1 against the Marlins this year and 14-3 against them since July. Winning the series was especially sweet for the Nationals after they were swept last weekend at Atlanta. "The way the road trip started, to get two out of three here is good," Werth said. Miamis Derek Dietrich hit a tape-measure three-run homer, his third. The Marlins have homered in eight consecutive games after finishing last in the majors in home runs in 2013. Giancarlo Stanton, baseballs RBIs leader, went 0 for 4, including two at-bats with runners in scoring position. Fernandez remained 11-0 at home and became only the third major league pitcher since 1914 to go unbeaten in his first 18 home starts, according to STATS. And he appeared headed for a victory until the sixth. After Jose Lobaton led off with a double, Saltalamacchia made an ill-advised throw to third on a bunt, and both runners were safe when the throw was errant. With one out, Saltalamacchia dropped a pop foul for another error that forced Fernandez to throw extra pitches. Werths homer deflected off the hands of a fan in the first row of the right-field seats. The ruling was upheld by a replay review that took only 22 seconds. "We have the ability to come back because guys grind at-bats and never give up," Williams said. Its right there in front of us, defensive lineman Jason Jones said.Coach Jim Caldwell doesnt want to hear that kind of talk.I hope hes talking about tasting practice next week, getting ready for the Bears, Caldwell said. Thats probably what it was. Ill clarify it for him.The Lions dont want to get too far ahead of themselves, but Sundays 16-14 victory over Minnesota put Detroit in a tie for first place in the NFC North. The Lions can clinch a playoff berth with a victory next weekend at Chicago, and no matter what happens in that game, Detroit will take the division if it wins at Green Bay the following week. For a while, it looked as if the Lions (10-4) might waste their opportunity to pull even with the Packers atop the division. Green Bay had already lost to Buffalo when Detroit spotted Minnesota a 14-0 lead, but the Lions rallied thanks to two second-quarter interceptions, and they finally took the lead on Matt Praters 33-yard field goal with 3:38 left in the fourth quarter. The Vikings (6-8) had the ball two more times, but by the end they were reduced to sending Blair Walsh out to try a 68-yard field goal on the games final play. It was short, and the Lions held on.The Lions have been through a lot of seasons where they havent been doing too good, said Jones, who is from nearby Southfield. I experienced it when I was younger, but just to be a part of this right now and what we can bring to this city, its so important right now. Our fans, they want it, we want it and were going to go back to work. Here are a few things about Detroits tight victory:Defence FIRST: The Lions didnt manage a first down until their fifth offensive possession, and they never totally solved the Minnesota defence, so it was up to Detrooits defence to keep the game close. New Balance Australia Womens. Glover Quins second-quarter interception, which included a 56-yard return, set up the only touchdown of the game for the Lions.Darius Slay added another interception in the second quarter, and Detroit shut out the Vikings in the second half.BOUNCING BACK: Minnesota quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was sacked eight times in a loss to the Lions in October, and Detroit got to him four more times Sunday. The two interceptions were crucial, but Bridgewater went 31 of 41 for 315 yards and a touchdown.I think hes pretty resilient in really everything, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. I thought offensively we had a pretty good plan against them. Our backs ran hard, we kept fighting for extra yards.CRUCIAL KICKS: In a remarkable reversal, the Lions won this game because of field goals. Prater made all three of his attempts, while Walsh missed from 53 and 68 and had a 26-yarder blocked by Jones in the fourth quarter.Detroit has missed 12 field goals this season, but most of those were before Prater joined the team in October.HELD IN CHECK: Although Detroit won, the Lions were held to a season-low 233 yards of offence. Detroit didnt do much better in its 17-3 win over Minnesota in October. The Lions had only 255 yards in that game.HAPPY AT HOME: The Lions finished 7-1 at home this regular season, the first time theyve managed that since 1995. By sweeping a three-game homestand against Chicago, Tampa Bay and Minnesota, theyve put themselves in a good position to reach the playoffs. These fans deserve the world for everything that theyve been through, centre Dominic Raiola said. Not only in this building with this team, but life in general being here in Detroit. Just some little positivity in everybodys world aint going to hurt.___Online: and ' ' '
