"Other than that Matt Carpenter Jersey , how was the play Mrs. Lincoln ?""cks Farm TeamsGameday ThreadsDiamondbacks NewsDiamondbacks Game ReportsFang Food2018 Diamondbacks Player Reviews #19: Andrew ChafinNew,32comments“Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln ?”2014-2017 Andrew Chafin threw 163 MLB innings, posting a respectable 3.65 ERA,3.31 FIP, and 119 ERA+.So on the surface, his 2018 ERA/FIP and other numbers shown above look like a considerable improvement. However few relievers elicited more groans when he entered the game in a tight situation than Chafin. So why the disconnect ?In a word:Leverage. Andrew struggled most when it counted most, and specifically struggled with throwing strikes in the most important situations and to first batters.Time and time it seemed like he was brought in to face a batter and that runner got on base by walk or hit, and Torey had to go get another reliever to try to shut things down. There are stats and splits for showing how well a player did inHigh, Medium, and Low Leverage situations available at both Fangraphs and Baseball-Reference. I’ll be using the FG version for this part of the article. Most are familiar with the Win Expectancy graph and theWPAheroes and goatsthat are highlighted at the bottom of each game recap. If you are not familiar with WPA, and Win Expectancy, then please readHERE. Simply puteach play is assigned a numeric value for how much it added or subtracted to the odds of winning that specific game. That value is assigned to the player and added up. Players that did well in high leverage situations have positive numbers, and those that did poorly have negative numbers. In 2018 http://www.stlouiscardinalsteamshop.com/authentic-marcell-ozuna-jersey ,Anrew Chafin’sWPA was -0.88. That was the 11th worst number among 94 NL Relievers with 40 or more IP. Table Link Here. Don’t forget to check out number 9 by the way. Also if you click on the WPA column header it will sort again from best to worst as well. Here is the summary for Chafin’s career in High Leverage:As you can see, the inability to throw strikes in high leverage situations has been there for most of his career. He gets plenty of K’s, and doesn’t give up homers, but he simply walks too many batters, and when he’s not walking them, he’s falling behind in the count and then grooving pitches that get hammered, hence the high BABIP.When he is in medium leverage situations, his walk rate is 4.5/9,which is still not great, but better than the 7.4 BB/9 he has in high leverage. When he is in low leverage, the BB/9 drops all the way down to 2.8/9.Medium Leverage StatsLow Leverage StatsNow these may all be small sample sizes, however the trend has been so pervasive from year to year, that it’s pretty hard to deny that Andrew has a problem throwing strikes in high pressure situations. His first batter efficiency especially was extremely poor.I asked Torey Lovullo about that during one of the post game interviews, and he was quite frankly somewhat exasperated...(either by Chafin Lou Brock Jersey , the question, or both). He made it clear they were well aware of the problem and had tried various measure to address it, but clearly none were effective. Chafin has great stuff. There is plenty of swing and miss in his game. He doesn’t allow homeruns. He induces a lot of groundballs.“Other than that.......” were it not for this one singular flaw in his game, he would be a borderline elite reliever. But it’s a huge flaw that can’t be overlooked.Whether or not he can overcome whatever it is that causes him to be so wild in tight situations will be the key for his 2019 season and beyond. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dee Gordon helped Seattle with his bat and his glove. The Mariners are rolling along quite nicely at the moment.Gordon got three hits and drove in two runs as high-scoring Seattle extended baseball’s best record with a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.Jay Bruce hit his AL-leading seventh homer in the first inning, extending the Mariners’ string to 13 games at the start of the season with at least one home run, matching the Detroit Tigers in 2017. The 2002 Cleveland Indians (14 games) are the only team since 1908 to open the season with more games with home runs.Seattle also matched the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals with the most home runs (33) through their first 13 games.“Our lineup, top to bottom, has been really good,” manager Scott Servais said. “We had the one home run early, and I say ‘just one home run’ because we’re used to more. We were able to tack on some runs late which was really helpful.”The Mariners improved to 11-2 and have scored at least five runs in 12 of those games. The Royals lost their eighth in a row.Gordon singled and scored on Bruce’s grounder in the third. He hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the fourth and singled again in the sixth.Gordon also made a couple of nice plays in the field. He said he is happy to be spending more time at second base after playing four different positions last season.“I like playing second base,” he said. “That’s my job. We’re not always going to score a bunch of runs. We’re going to have some real close contests and you’ve got to play defense.”Kansas City manager Ned Yost said Gordon was the difference for Seattle.“Four times we had opportunities there that were just right there,” he said. “All four, Dee Gordon. We just hit them right to where he could just barely get enough reach on them.”Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 30 games Ken Boyer Jersey , tying a Royals record set by George Brett in 1980. He led off the bottom of the first with an opposite-field triple to stretch a streak that began last Sept. 10 and included the final 20 games of the season.“There’s a lot of genuine happiness and joy for me, which was special to share that moment with these guys,” Merrifield said. “But, it’s special to do something that one of the greatest of all time has done. My eye’s not on George’s record. We’ve got more games to go.”Speedy Billy Hamilton scored from second base on a sacrifice fly when Seattle’s Mallex Smith fell down in deep center catching Adalberto Mondesi’s drive, making it 2-all in the third.Marco Gonzales (4-0) gave up two earned runs in six-plus innings. Anthony Swarzak pitched the ninth for his second save in two opportunities.Jakob Junis (1-1) allowed four runs in four innings. Richard Lovelady, the Royals’ fourth pitcher, tossed a perfect eighth inning in his major league debut.TRAINER’S ROOMMariners: INF Tim Beckham remained out of the starting lineup with tightness in his right hamstring. He tweaked it in the Mariners’ 12-5 victory over the White Sox on Sunday. Servais said the decision to hold out Beckham was by the training staff. “Beckham feels better today,” he said. “He could probably go out there and start the ballgame tonight.”Royals: LHPs Danny Duffy and Brian Flynn remain on the 10-day injured list with arm issues. Yost said they’re “doing fine” in their rehabs but wouldn’t elaborate further.ROSTER NEWSThe Mariners placed right-hander Chasen Bradford was placed on the 10-day IL with shoulder inflammation.“We’ve used him a lot early,” Servais said. “He’s kind of our go-to guy. You know what you’re going to get when Chasen goes out there. He’s been very effective. We got a couple of innings out of him last night. He came in after the game and said he felt a little sore, tight.”He was replaced on the roster by right-hander Erik Swanson, who is looking for his major league debut. The Royals promoted right-hander Heath Fillmyer and Lovelady from Triple-A Omaha. Right-hander Kevin McCarthy and lefty Tim Hill were optioned to Omaha.UP NEXTMariners: LHP Yusei Kikuchi (0-0, 4.02 ERA) will get the start in the second game of the four-game series.Royals: Fillmyer will make his 2019 debut for the Royals.
