PITTSBURGH (AP) — It wasn’t the hastily arranged private plane ride from Miami to Pittsburgh. Or the police escort from the airport to PPG Paints Arena. It wasn’t the sight of a black-and-gold jersey with his name on the back hanging in the Pittsburgh Penguins‘ locker room. It wasn’t even racing to the bench and jumping over the wall and onto the ice with his new teammates without exchanging so much as an introductory handshake. No Custom Toronto Maple Leafs Jerseys , Jared McCann’s “whoa” moment from the most exhilarating and surreal weekend of his professional life came Sunday, when the newly acquired forward arrived at Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby’s house to watch the Super Bowl with the rest of the gang.“There’s like an area to the side there, and it’s Hart Trophy, Hart Trophy, Hart Trophy,” McCann said, referring to Crosby’s three NHL MVP awards.Welcome to Pittsburgh, where the climate isn’t the only thing that’s a shock to the system. On Friday morning, McCann and Nick Bjugstad thought they were part of the long-term plans for the Florida Panthers. By Sunday night, they were hanging out in the home of one of the game’s biggest stars while playing for a team where anything less than a Stanley Cup parade through downtown in mid-June is considered a disappointment. No pressure or anything.“As soon as I walked in the rink here www.officialcanucks.com , they have the (championships) banners hanging everywhere,” McCann said. “It’s like: ‘You know what? We win here.’ You get that feeling. You just have confidence. You know you have guys that are going to show up every night and play well, and I want to be a positive influence for this team.”The Penguins are counting on that from both the 22-year-old McCann and the 26-year-old Bjugstad, brought over in a trade with Florida for veteran forwards Riley Sheahan, Derick Brassard and three 2019 draft picks. The early returns have been promising. Both players hardly looked overwhelmed while playing a back-to-back against Ottawa and Toronto in their first 27 hours with their new club. Bjugstad joined the second line and picked up an assist in a victory over the Senators while McCann played solidly centering the third line between forwards Tanner Pearson and Patric Hornqvist.“I thought they handled it great coming into a new dressing room 10 minutes before the game, getting thrown in there right into a game, playing some pretty good minutes, too,” Crosby said. “There’s a lot to be said about that. Sometimes that’s the best way, get thrown into it like that.”McCann credited Hornqvist for helping put him in the right spots on the ice over the weekend while the 6-foot-6 Bjugstad tried not to overdo it while centering the second line in place of injured Evgeni Malkin.“It’s almost better not having time to think Vancouver Canucks T-Shirts Authentic ,” Bjugstad said. That came on Monday when they went through their first practice in Pittsburgh. If Bjugstad wasn’t getting pulled away for a private moment with assistant coach Mark Recchi, then McCann was peppering anyone who would listen with questions. While they want to catch up quickly for a team that heads into Tuesday’s game against Carolina tied with Washington for second in the Metropolitan Division with 30 games to go, they also have the benefit of time. Neither player is a rental. Bjugstad is signed through 2021 while McCann’s contract runs through the end of the 2019-20 season.Coach Mike Sullivan still hasn’t settled on who will play where once Malkin — who is day to day with an upper-body injury — returns. Bjugstad could be effective as a third-line center, a spot the Penguins have been struggling to fill since Nick Bonino left following the team’s second straight Stanley Cup in 2017.Bjugstad also has size (6-foot-6) and a skillset that includes a 20-goal season, making him a candidate to find a spot in the top six. McCann, meanwhile, is an effective penalty killer who believes he is prepared for whatever the Penguins might throw his way. He already is taking pointers from 42-year-old Matt Cullen, who had made a career out of finding ways to do all the little things coaches love. It’s not a bad blueprint to follow.“I feel like this is a great opportunity for me to become the player I know I can be,” McCann said.First things first, however. McCann acknowledged he might have to stop at a shopping mall to pick up some pants. Seems he was in such a rush to get to Pittsburgh he mostly packed shorts for the trip north Vancouver Canucks Hoodies Authentic , not exactly ideal in a city where the sun is more rumor than fact between November and May. If that’s his lone misstep after the craziness surrounding his arrival, he’ll take it.“I had a great time in Florida,” McCann said. “But I feel like this is the next stepping stone in my career.” Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson's suspension for his preseason hit to the head of the St. Louis Blues' Oskar Sundqvist has been reduced from 20 games to 14, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.NHL Player Safety NHLPlayerSafetyWashington鈥檚 Tom Wilson suspended twenty games for an Illegal Check to the Head on St. Louis鈥?Oskar Sundqvist. ojQ4yN6oFNThe league released an official statement on the ruling:NHL Public Relations PR_NHLNHL and NHLPA statement on Tom Wilson suspension.Complete arbitrator decision: 5JXYsGsYbx 8s5l6LtxXJWilson is eligible to play in Tuesday night's game against the Minnesota Wild. We didn’t win (Sunday). We had a chance to really do something (Sunday) and we didn’t get it done.”A win against the Eagles would have given Houston (10-5) the AFC South title. After the 32-30 loss to Philadelphia on a last-second field goal, the Texans need a victory over Jacksonville to win their division, and a win and a loss or tie by New England to get a first-round bye. They’ll try and do that with a team riddled with injuries. Running back Lamar Miller missed Sunday’s game and remains a question mark for the Jacksonville game with an ankle injury. His absence led to another day of struggles in the running game. Alfred Blue and D’Onta Foreman, who made his 2018 debut after tearing an Achilles tendon in November 2017, combined to rush for just 13 yards.“We just haven’t gotten it done,” O’Brien said. “I don’t know what else to tell you. We just have to keep trying to get better.”Star receiver DeAndre Hopkins played despite a gimpy ankle and O’Brien hopes he’ll feel better by Sunday. But Houston will be without receiver Demaryius Thomas after he sustained what O’Brien indicated is a season-ending Achilles tendon injury against the Eagles. The injury to Thomas is a blow to an already thin group of receivers. Houston traded for the four-time Pro Bowler on Oct. 30 after receiver Will Fuller tore a knee ligament. O’Brien wouldn’t provide details on Thomas’ injury, but his comments indicated he wouldn’t play again this season.“Demaryius is a great player, excellent pro Charles Omenihu Houston Texans Jersey , but I feel good about the guys that we have and some of the moves that we may make to help that position,” O’Brien said. “I think we can do some things to take up the slack there a little bit. It will be a loss because he was such a good pro and a mentor — all of those things — but we have to move forward.”One player who could help fill in for Thomas is Keke Coutee. The rookie has played well when healthy, but has missed nine games, including the last four, with hamstring problems. O’Brien didn’t rule out that Coutee could return against the Jaguars.“He’s a really good player,” he said. “We like him. We’ll just have to see how it goes this week.”On Sunday, the Texans got a big play from undrafted rookie receiver Vyncint Smith, who had just one reception this season entering the game. Deshaun Watson connected with Smith on a 35-yard touchdown pass that gave Houston the lead before Philadelphia’s late field goal. The Texans like Smith’s speed and O’Brien said he’s improved a lot since the beginning of the season. He added that Smith and Watson have already developed a good rapport, despite his limited action.“You don’t make that throw unless you have faith in the guy to make that play Charles Omenihu Jersey 2019 ,” O’Brien said. “I know D4 (Watson) has faith in the guy to make plays, and that’s big — the trust.”Whoever the Texans have at receiver Sunday, the team remains confident in its passing game because of the continued development of Watson in his second year. Watson has eight touchdown passes with no interceptions in the last five games and has added three rushing touchdowns in that span.O’Brien loves the way Watson has played this season and the leadership role he’s taken on this team.“He makes a lot of great decisions. He’s got good poise,” O’Brien said. “He’s obviously extremely talented. He made so many plays (Sunday) with his feet, he made plays from the pocket. He made plays outside the pocket. He ran. He did everything he could to help his team win.”Some good news on the injury front for Houston is that cornerback/safety Kareem Jackson, who left early in Sunday’s game with a knee injury, should be ready against Jacksonville.

After losing forward Max Pacioretty, who left Friday’s game after being drilled by Tampa Bay’s Braydon Coburn, forward Cody Eakin left Sunday’s game after being hit in the head by Mark Borowiecki in the first period.“It was a big hit, I don’t think Borowiecki wanted to go over there and exactly hit Cody Eakin in the head,” Gallant said. “But the puck came to Cody right there and he was coming in with a lot of speed …. but I don’t think there was any intent to try and hurt the guy.”Duchene gave the Senators an early 1-0 lead in the first period, and Ryan extended Ottawa’s lead midway through the second period, when he punched home the Senators’ first road power-play goal of the season.“Our players are giving everything they’ve got Womens Devante Smith-Pelly Jersey , we talked about having 60 minutes of keeping it together and that’s exactly what our players did,” Ottawa coach Guy Boucher said “That’s the difference with the previous two games (against) Boston and Colorado, where we played really good for two periods and then just because the other team scored, whether it’s the end of the second or beginning of the third, all of a sudden we start to get out of whack, impatient, lose our structure … we didn’t do that tonight. The composure was there the entire game. That’s a big building block for us.”Tuch, who missed the first eight games of the season with a lower-body injury, notched his first goal of the season when he went forehand-backhand to deke Anderson and cut Ottawa’s lead in half. Reaves scored his first career power-play goal when he tied the game with 1:39 left in the second period.Playing a nifty passing game of tic-tac-toe, Dzingel was the beneficiary as he scored his team-leading fourth road goal of the season to put Ottawa back on top. The lead didn’t last long, though http://www.officialcanucks.com/authentic-adidas-sven-baertschi-jersey , as Tuch scored his second goal 28 seconds later.“It’s a big win, especially since we’re going on the road for two really hard games against two really good opponents,” Tuch said. “I thought we played really well today, we had a lot of shots, we had a lot of guys in front of the net, Craig Anderson played an unbelievable game, but we just kept battling.”NOTES: Vegas went 1 for 5 with an extra man, and is 4 for 37 on power-play opportunities this season. …. The Austrian star extended his first-run lead to finish 0.93 ahead of Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway in a familiar runner-up spot. Andre Myhrer of Sweden was third, 1.72 back.
Hirscher’s domination was so complete he also had the fastest time in the second run, 0.34 quicker than Kristoffersen, by attacking his rival’s target rather than protecting his lead.
”I have been on the limits, especially on the steep part, so everybody is beatable,” Hirscher said.
Hirscher’s fifth straight success in slalom was the 53rd World Cup win of his career yet a first at the storied Swiss course where he is a three-time runner-up.
”It’s something big for me. This was the last classic race on the calendar that I haven’t won until today,” the reigning slalom world champion said.
Earning 100 World Cup points, Hirscher stretched his lead over second-placed Kristoffersen in both the overall and slalom season-long standings. Hirscher is the six-time defending overall champion.
Yet again at a post-race news conference Justin Layne Jersey , Kristoffersen was asked how it is possible to beat Hirscher on current form.
”He is just better, that’s the way it is,” said the 24-year-old Norwegian, who has seven runner-up finishes this season without a win. ”I will never give up, that’s for sure.”
Hirscher is third on the men’s all-time World Cup wins list and will be favored to match the 54-win total of Austrian great Hermann Maier next weekend. Appropriately, the World Cup circuit now moves to celebrated Austrian venue Kitzbuehel.
At age 28, Hirscher would need several more years of consistent winning to catch the 86 wins of Ingemar Stenmark, the Swedish great who raced slalom and giant slalom in the 1970s and 80s.
In the 2014 Sochi Olympic slalom, Hirscher and Kristoffersen took silver and bronze, respectively, behind the now-retired Mario Matt of Austria.
”Right now, Marcel is in a league of his own,” said Myhrer, the 2010 Olympic bronze medalist.
In a World Cup comeback after three years out injured, Nolan Kasper of the United States placed 20th.
The 28-year-old Kasper’s return could be in time to earn a third Olympic selection. He placed 13th and 24th in the previous two Olympic slaloms.
Kasper was joined in the top 20 Sunday by another racer wearing a starting bib number in the 50s. Ryunosuke Ohkoshi of Japan was 19th, 4.94 behind the winner.
Living with an NFL football player can have its upsides Zach Gentry Jersey , but it can be no surprise that a lot of the time these relationships end in tears. With all the millions of dollars and fame that comes with partnering up with a footballer, the win-at-all-costs mentality has knock-on effects that impact on their private lives. It’s easy to flick on the competitive switch come game time, it’s switching it off again that’s the problem.NFL players have a history of attitude and perspective problems. Pick up a newspaper, listen to the radio or watch the 6 o’clock news and you will see what we mean. Whether it’s cheating on their spouse, talking trash or getting in hot water with law enforcement – it quickly dawns on a lot of these women that they were in over their heads opting into a relationship with these people. The majority of them are good family men, yet every group has their bad apples. With marriage breakdowns becoming all the more common in society, the couples that make it last under the spotlight deserve the credit. In the NFL arena the likes of Russell Wilson and Ciara, Tony Romo and Candice Crawford, and of course Joey Bosa Jersey , Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen, all thrive as a pairing in their private lives. When it works, it can be incredibly lucrative because the paparazzi and sponsors end up eating out of their hands. In most cases footballers don’t marry or hook up with megastar celebrities. Sometimes they will be childhood sweethearts or just women who catch the attention. Outside of the initial attraction there can be little rhyme or reason why some of them hook up, so it’s any wonder why people are shocked when the break up is announced to the world. Most of them move on quite quickly and it all becomes yesterdays news. But lets take this time to look back at the 15 breakups involving NFL footballers that we did notice.
The sweet-swinging Cleveland Indians are taking their show on the road after one successful homestand.
Edwin Encarnacion hit an eighth-inning grand slam Joey Bosa Jersey , helping the Indians rout the Detroit Tigers 12-2 on Sunday for their season-high seventh straight win.
Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez and Jason Kipnis also connected for Cleveland, which outscored Detroit 26-3 in the three-game sweep. Ramirez finished with three hits, extending his streak of reaching base to 31 consecutive games.
”Everybody’s doing their part,” Encarnacion said. ”The top of the lineup, the bottom of the lineup. Everything’s going great.”
Adam Plutko (4-1) pitched six innings of two-run ball, becoming the second rookie starter to beat the Tigers in the series. Shane Bieber pitched seven innings in Friday night’s 12-0 win.
Tigers starter Matthew Boyd (4-6) allowed a season-high six runs in three-plus innings in his shortest outing of the season.
Detroit has lost five straight overall and is 3-10 against Cleveland this season.
”They’re hot, they’re swinging the bats good, and they jumped on us early again today Tony Pollard Jersey ,” Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said. ”The ball is flying here now.”
The Indians have outscored their opponents 54-9 during their win streak. They open a nine-game road trip Monday night in St. Louis.
”We’re having a lot of fun,” Encarnacion said.
Cleveland had the game in hand when it added five more runs in the eighth. Kipnis hit a leadoff drive against Artie Lewicki. Lindor’s single and a double by Michael Brantley put runners on second and third.
Ramirez was intentionally walked and Encarnacion followed with a drive to right for his 11th career grand slam.
”When Edwin swings like that, it has to make them think twice,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. ”Then when they pitch around somebody, you love to see it hurt the other team. And you can tell Edwin was really bearing down there.”
Niko Goodrum and James McCann had RBI singles for Detroit in the fourth.
ADD AN O TO OHIO
The Tigers have lost all nine games they have played in the state of Ohio this season. Detroit was swept in a four-game series at Progressive Field in April. The Tigers lost both games in Cincinnati this week before heading north. The Tigers return to Cleveland in September.
”They took it to us this weekend, there’s no doubt,” McCann said.
CAN’T LOOK
Francona doesn’t enjoy certain parts of interleague games in NL parks, such as when his pitchers have to hit. Mike Clevinger, Corey Kluber and Bieber will be the starters in St. Louis.
”They’re doing things they’re not used to Noah Fant Jersey , even running the bases,” Francona said. ”They’re just not used to doing that during a game. They’re using different muscles, not that they’re not in good shape but they’re just doing different things. We definitely are holding our breath.”
BAD INNING
The eighth was difficult for Lewicki, who was hit on the right ankle by Lindor’s hard grounder to the mound. He remained in the game after a visit from Gardenhire and a team trainer, but gave up the grand slam before finally being pulled.
The right-hander allowed six runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Tigers: RHP Drew VerHagen (broken nose) will not resume baseball activities for two weeks after being struck on the face with a throw from shortstop Jose Iglesias while covering first base Tuesday in Cincinnati.
Indians: RHP Carlos Carrasco will throw bullpen sessions this week to test his bruised elbow. He was struck by a line drive hit by Minnesota’s Joe Mauer on June 16.
UP NEXT
Tigers: RHP Jordan Zimmermann (2-0, 4.95 ERA) takes on Oakland at Comerica Park on Monday in the opener of a four-game series.
Indians: Clevinger (6-2, 3.00 ERA) pitches the series opener in St. Louis on Monday. RHP John Gant (1-2, 4.39 ERA) starts for the Cardinals.
In games where the St. Louis Cardinals hit homers and pitch well, they generally walk off the field with a win.
But on nights where they can’t connect with the long ball Dalton Risner Jersey , they don’t consistently make up for it with situational hitting or defense. Friday night’s 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves was another example of that trend rearing its ugly head.
After failing to cash in leadoff walks in the bottom of the first against Braves starter Julio Teheran, St. Louis simply couldn’t crack the code. It eventually caught up with the Cardinals as they were held to one run for their second straight game.
For St. Louis (42-38) to even the series Saturday night at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals will have to do a better job of converting runners in scoring position into runs while not giving up extra outs defensively. The Cardinals’ three errors Friday night marked their 17th multi-error game in 80 games.
St. Louis is on a pace to commit more than 130 miscues this year, continuing a three-season trend of below-average defense. Permitting good teams like Atlanta (46-34) four or five outs in an inning is a recipe for disaster.
The Braves started a 10-game road trip with a positive result. Third baseman Johan Camargo was the offensive star, going 3-for-5 with two runs and a two-run double off Jordan Hicks in the eighth that broke open a 1-0 game.
“Baseball is all about its ups and downs,” Camargo said. “For me, it’s all about maintaining the focus and just staying the path.”
Atlanta essentially heeded Camargo’s credo, bouncing back from consecutive series losses against last-place teams Baltimore and Cincinnati. It will turn to left-hander Max Fried (0-2, 4.09 ERA) on Saturday to secure a series win.
Fried is replacing veteran right-hander Brandon McCarthy Drew Lock Jersey , who was put on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a knee injury. A former first-round pick of San Diego, Fried will make his first start since going five innings and giving up one earned run on May 28 in a no-decision against the New York Mets.
It will be the second career appearance against the Cardinals for Fried, who last year tossed a scoreless inning in relief against them.
Right-hander Luke Weaver (4-6, 4.59) will look for his second straight win for St. Louis. Weaver shrugged off a rough first inning Sunday in Milwaukee to grab an 8-2 win, fanning a season-high nine over 5 2/3 innings while yielding two runs off five hits and two walks.
Weaver needed 32 pitches to make it through a two-run first inning, but started finding the range with his off-speed pitches. That made his fastball play bigger, and he rolled through the middle innings while the Cardinals bombed Jhoulys Chacin out of the box with five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
After rain washed out Thursday’s scheduled series opener http://www.denverbroncosteamonline.com/dre_mont-jones-jersey , the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox will play a day-night doubleheader on Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field to kick off a four-game series.
The A’s will go for their season-high fifth win in a row when they finally take the field on Chicago’s South Side.
Oakland (38-36) has won four straight games on four occasions this season, including its current stretch, but has yet to make it five. The A’s have outscored opponents 28-15 during this week’s streak, which includes two wins apiece against the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres.
A’s hitters slugged five homers in a 12-4 rout of the Padres on Wednesday. The team already has four players with double-digit blasts including Khris Davis (20), Matt Olson (15), Jed Lowrie (11) and the injured Matt Chapman (10).
“We definitely have some power,” A’s manager Bob Melvin told the A’s official website. “That’s one of the strengths of the team.”
As Oakland is riding a hot streak, Chicago (24-49) is mired in a seven-game losing streak. A loss in the series opener would give the White Sox their worst skid of the season, which is saying something considering the club’s ugly record.
White Sox manager Rick Renteria’s club has been swept in its last two series, against the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians. In Wednesday’s series finale, Chicago managed only two hits in a 12-0 shutout loss to the Indians.
“It’s tough, but instead of getting frustrated, we have to keep working, use that feeling to work harder,” White Sox second baseman Yoan Moncada told the team’s official website. “There are still plenty of games to play, and we can improve. We can keep getting better, and if it is not this year T.J. Hockenson Jersey , then next year. But definitely the games we have this year, we have a chance to improve.”
The White Sox will turn to right-hander James Shields (2-8, 4.63 ERA) in the first game of the twin bill. The 36-year-old has pitched at least six innings in 11 consecutive starts as part of a bounce-back season atop the club’s rotation.
In his career against Oakland, Shields is 6-7 with a 4.86 ERA in 19 games (18 starts). He came in as a reliever in the 14th inning of a game against Oakland in April this season, and gave up two hits, two walks and the game-winning run in two-thirds of an inning.
The A’s will start the doubleheader with left-hander Sean Manaea (6-6, 3.56 ERA), who grew up in Northwest Indiana, not far from Chicago. The 26-year-old is off to a good start this season with 19 walks and 68 strikeouts in 93 2/3 innings.
Manaea has never faced the White Sox in his career.
In the nightcap, White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (4-7, 7.19 ERA) will look to improve in his 15th start of the season. The former first-round pick of the Washington Nationals (No. 16 overall in 2012) has terrific potential but has been unable to produce consistent results in his first full season in Chicago.
Poor command has plagued Giolito, who has 45 walks in 71 1/3 innings. He also has hit 10 batters, which is tied for most in the majors along with Cole Hamels of the Texas Rangers and Carlos Martinez of the St. Louis Cardinals.
This will mark the 23-year-old’s first career appearance against Oakland.
For the A’s, right-hander Chris Bassitt (0-2, 2.45 ERA) will make his third start of the season in the nightcap. The 29-year-old is seeking his first victory since Aug. 4, 2015, against the Baltimore Orioles.
Bassitt is quite familiar with the White Sox Justice Hill Jersey , who drafted him in the 16th round in 2011 and developed him in the minors. He went 1-1 with a 3.94 ERA in six appearances (five starts) as a rookie in Chicago in 2014.
Bassitt has faced the White Sox once in his career, giving up eight hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings on April 5, 2016. He did not get a decision in Chicago’s 5-4 victory.
On Dec. 9, 2014, the White Sox shipped Bassitt, Marcus Semien, Josh Phegley and minor leaguer Rangel Ravelo to Oakland for Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa. The trade did not pan out as hoped for Chicago, which retained Samardzija for one underwhelming season before he signed as a free agent with the San Francisco Giants.
This is the first series of the season between the teams. Last year, Oakland won the season series 5-1.
Cole Hamels and Mike Fiers could soon find themselves in a pennant race. Both veterans can increase their chances of joining a championship contender with solid starts on Saturday afternoon.
The two pitchers will be the mound opponents when the Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers play the third game of a four-game series at Detroit’s Comerica Park. They have split the first two games.
Both teams are floundering, but contenders seeking veteran help could turn to Hamels or Fiers.
Hamels, a 34-year-old Texas left-hander, knows about the trade rumors but is more concerned with improving upon his recent outings.
“It’s not a big deal,” he told MLB.com after his last start. “It’s out of my control. I have to go and pitch, and hopefully that’ll be the last time I have to answer that question.”
Hamels had stellar road outings against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City in mid-June, but he lasted just five innings in each of his last two starts. He gave up a season-high seven runs and nine hits to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Hamels (4-7, 4.05 ERA) is 4-2 with a 3.69 ERA in six career starts against the Tigers.
Fiers has been at the top of his game in his last two starts. He held Oakland to one run and five hits in seven innings, then worked a season-high eight innings on Monday in Toronto. The Blue Jays managed just one run and three hits http://www.ravenscheapstores.com/ben-powers-jersey-cheap , but he wound up with no-decision when the bullpen couldn’t hold a one-run lead in the ninth inning.
Fiers (5-5, 3.79) has kept opponents off-balance by mixing well-located fastballs with a healthy dose of curveballs and changeups.
“He was changing speeds, locating the ball,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said afterward. “He paints the strike zone. When the catcher sets up away and in front, he throws away and in front.”
Fiers issued 62 walks in 29 outings last season with Houston and was left off the playoff roster. He has shown much better control this year, issuing 20 free passes in 16 starts.
“Just throwing a lot of strikes, changing speeds,” Fiers told the Detroit News. “I’m just glad I got the opportunity here.”
Texas has solved Fiers in the past. He’s 1-3 wth an 8.10 ERA in seven career appearances against the Rangers.
Texas didn’t have any luck on Friday night against Detroit pitcher Jordan Zimmermann after Shin-Soo Choo smacked a leadoff homer. Zimmermann struck out a season-high 11 batters in the Tigers’ 3-1 victory.
Zimmermann pitched eight innings, allowing Gardenhire to go straight to fill-in closer Joe Jimenez. Detroit’s regular closer, Shane Greene, is on the disabled list.
“Best thing we’re all seeing is we’re pounding the strike zone right now,” Gardenhire said. “Pitchers are getting deeper into games. That’s really going to help our baseball team.”
Choo’s on-base streak increased to 45 games with the homer, his 17th this season. His bat hasn’t cooled off despite a nagging right quad injury. Choo is batting .291 with a .401 on-base percentage.
The Rangers had scored five or more runs in eight of their previous 12 games.
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey has been arrested on a charge of stealing a phone charging cord from an Uber driver.
Court records show the former Alabama player was arrested Thursday on a third-degree robbery charge in Tuscaloosa Rock Ya-Sin Jersey , Alabama.
The 21-year-old Humphrey is free on bond after being held briefly.
The Tuscaloosa News reports that records show an Uber driver claimed Humphrey borrowed a $15 charger on a pre-dawn ride to a University of Alabama campus hotel on Jan. 13 but refused to return it.
A charging document says Humphrey elbowed the driver and balled up a fist.
A Ravens statement says Humphrey told the team there was a misunderstanding over a phone charger he thought was his.
An attorney representing Humphrey didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
For NFL fans, it's an absolute joy to see guys like Drew Brees, Tom Brady http://www.coltscheapshop.com/cheap-authentic-ben-banogu-jersey , Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore defy age. These guys are all future Hall of Famers, and even though most players at their respective positions begin to slow down by their early 30s, these legends just keep on going. Who could have thought that Brady and Brees would be enjoying MVP-like seasons at age 41 and 39 Parris Campbell Jersey , respectively? Aren't most great quarterbacks supposed to be done once they turn 37-39?And how are guys like Gore (35), and Peterson (33), still going? So many great running backs stop playing once they reach their early 30s; just ask the likes of Barry Sanders and LaDainian Tomlinson. But even though it's been a real joy seeing some of these perennial Pro Bowlers dominate for over a decade http://www.ravenscheapstores.com/miles-boykin-jersey-cheap , it's important to remember that they are only human. No athlete plays forever, and logic suggests these guys will all be out of the NFL within the next two or three years. With some of the NFL's top veterans bound to be out of football soon, it's time for their teams to start preparing for succession plans. The Green Bay Packers drafted Aaron Rodgers in the first round of the 2005 draft http://www.coltscheapshop.com/cheap-authentic-bobby-okereke-jersey Jersey , knowing a 36-year-old Brett Favre was nearing the end of his career. Here are the 10 players who could succeed the guys who are going to be out of the NFL soon.
A look at what’s happening around the majors Sunday:
CHICAGO’S ACE
Jon Lester has put together some ace-worthy seasons during his 13-year major league career http://www.ravenscheapstores.com/trace-mcsorley-jersey-cheap , including four All-Star appearances and a runner-up finish in the Cy Young voting two years ago. The Chicago Cubs left-hander is in the middle of what might prove to be his finest season so far, and he’ll look to become the National League’s first 12-game winner when he takes the mound against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. Lester is 11-2 with a 2.25 ERA this season, and he’s won his last seven starts – including going 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA during June.
GRADE-A OAKLAND
The Oakland A’s downed Cleveland 6-3 in 11 innings on Saturday, winning for the ninth time in their last 11 games and for the 15th time in their last 19. Oakland sits at a season-high nine games over .500 and will try and stay unbeaten for a seventh straight series when it closes out its series with the Indians. Brett Anderson (0-2, 7.63) starts for the A’s, and Shane Bieber (4-0 David Montgomery Jersey , 2.97) goes for Cleveland.
GOING GREINKE
Arizona starter Zack Greinke has turned around his season since posting a 5.04 ERA in April and is 9-5 with a 3.35 ERA overall, including 112 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings. The Diamondbacks right-hander will take the mound against the San Diego Padres, and he comes in having allowed only two runs in his last three starts combined – a span of 19 2/3 innings.
RICK’S REBOUND
Rick Porcello struggled mightily to follow up his 2016 Cy Young award-winning season a year ago, finishing a disappointing 11-17 with a 4.65 ERA. The Boston right-hander has returned to form this year with a 10-3 record and 3.57 ERA, and he’ll be on the mound when the Red Sox close out their season series with the Kansas City Royals.
OZUNA’S OUTAGE
Since winner the NL’s Player of the Week award last month, St. Louis outfielder Marcell Ozuna has been in a prolonged funk – going 15-for-71 (.211) and failing to hit a home run during that stretch. The Cardinals left fielder was the prized offseason acquisition in a trade from Miami http://www.bearscheapstores.com/riley-ridley-jersey-cheap , coming off a season in which he hit .312 with 37 home runs and 124 RBIs. This year, Ozuna is hitting .275 with 10 homers and 46 RBIs in 83 games.

If you are a sports fan who lives in North America, then you should consider yourself to be extremely lucky, because literally every single sport on the planet is played here, and it also happens to be home to the biggest professional sports leagues in the world. The MLB, NBA http://www.cowboyscheapauthenticstore.com/trysten-hill-jersey-cheap , and NHL, all feature the best players in their respective sports, and they each make billions of dollars in profit every single year, but none of them are close to matching the revenue that is generated by the National Football League. The NFL brought in roughly $14 billion this season, mainly thanks to television packages and ad revenue, which is to be expected seeing as more than 100 million people watch the championship game alone. With the Super Bowl having been played Connor McGovern Jersey , the 2017 season has officially come to an end, and like every other sports league, the NFL has had its ups and downs with issues that took place both on and off the field of play. Now that the season is over, it is time to look back at some of the things that made us laugh, whether it relates to an individual player or coach, or one or more teams Khari Willis Jersey , or the actual league itself, and what better way to do so than by using memes. A meme is essentially a humorous image with a piece of text attached to it, and most of them are indeed funny, and many of them are funny due to how savage they are, and this article will present 20 of those memes.
Janet Jackson has shut down any rumors that she will be joining Justin Timberlake during this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.
”To put to rest any speculation or rumors as to whether I will be performing at the Super Bowl tomorrow; I will not Will Harris Jersey ,” Jackson said in a statement released Saturday. ”Thank you for your support and I do look forward to seeing you all very soon.”
Timberlake is returning to the halftime show 14 years after a wardrobe malfunction with Jackson caused a national controversy. Timberlake was Jackson’s special guest during her performance at that year’s game and ripped off a piece of her clothing, revealing her nipple. Timberlake later described it as an unintended ”wardrobe malfunction.”
CBS, which aired that Super Bowl, was fined $550,000 by the Federal Communications Commission, but the fine later was overturned.
The hashtags (hash)JusticeforJanet and (hash)JanetJacksonAppreciationDay became trending topics on Twitter days before Timberlake’s record third trip to the stage at the Super Bowl, at which the Philadelphia Eagles will face the New England Patriots at the U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday.
At a press conference on Thursday, Timberlake mentioned Jackson’s name, along with Jay-Z and ‘NSync, when talking about rumored guests to join him onstage. He was not asked any direct questions about Jackson or the infamous wardrobe malfunction.
When the NFL announced late last year that Timberlake would be returning to the Super Bowl, the decision triggered a backlash from women, minorities and others who felt Jackson was unfairly forced to pay a far higher price than Timberlake faced. Some argued that Jackson, as a black woman Austin Bryant Jersey , fell victim to a racist and sexist double standard and received harsher treatment than Timberlake, as a white man, did, and they said he benefited from ”white male privilege.”
When asked during an interview last month if he and Jackson have since made peace, Timberlake said, ”Absolutely.”
He said he and Jackson have talked privately about what happened.
”I don’t know that a lot of people know that,” Timberlake said. ”I mean, I don’t think it’s my job to do that, because you value the relationships that you do have with people.”
Benched earlier this season and questioned for years, Tyrod Taylor and Blake Bortles have a chance to change public perception on the NFL’s playoff stage.
Taylor helped Buffalo end the longest, current postseason drought in North American pro sports (17 years) while Bortles led Jacksonville to its first playoff berth since the 2007 season.
Whichever one wins the next game could do wonders to his image.
The Jaguars (10-6) host the Bills (9-7) in an AFC wild-card game Sunday, a win-or-go-home matchup that means as much to the quarterbacks as anyone.
The Bills were in talks with free agent Brian Hoyer in March and ready to part ways with Taylor until he agreed to restructure his contract extension and make it a two-year deal worth $30.5 million. He has one year remaining, but the team could save $10 million by moving on after this season.
No one would be surprised to see it happen Rashan Gary Jersey , especially after coach Sean McDermott benched Taylor in favor of rookie Nathan Peterman in November. Peterman threw five first-half interceptions in a 54-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, and Taylor has been the team’s starter since .
”I don’t focus on things that I can’t control, and I’m going to continue to be that way,” said Taylor, who has 14 touchdown passes and four interceptions this season. ”All I can control right now is my preparation, my focus, my work ethic to putting it all in for this week. It’s a one-game season right now, and that’s for everyone.
”I can’t allow distractions or thinking too far ahead.”
Bortles has taken a similar approach despite constant bashing – and not just the typical criticism from fans and media.
Tennessee defensive end Jurrell Casey told a Nashville radio station this week, ”As long as Bortles is back there, if the ballgame is in his hands, he’s going to choke.”
Casey tried to clarify his comments two days later, writing on Twitter, ”Chill Darnell Savage Jr. Jersey , y’all. I was just hyping our defense. If we put the pressure, some QBs will choke.”
Hearing talk such as that is nothing new for Bortles, who’s been publicly ripped by Houston defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, Seattle safety Earl Thomas and Cincinnati linebacker Vontaze Burfict in the past two months.
”Players or peers talking about you is a little new,” said Bortles, who is a big reason Jacksonville is hosting its first playoff game since 1999.
”I’ve never been somebody that felt that is the way you should handle things, but guys are different. I had the chance, was fortunate enough to play for George O’Leary in college and playing for Coach O’Leary, you learned very quickly how to take criticism. I had four years of practice doing that, so there’s nobody that can say anything worse to me than he did.
”I got benched every other day.”
Jaguars coach Doug Marrone actually benched Bortles in the preseason, stirring speculation that his days in Jacksonville were numbered.
But Bortles regained the starting job a week later and has been better than expected since , although five interceptions in the past two games – both losses – have some questioning him again.
His first playoff game – Taylor went to the 2013 Super Bowl as Baltimore’s backup – could leave outsiders looking at him differently.
”Playing a playoff game in Jacksonville hasn’t happened in a while, so having that opportunity to play in front of our fans and our city and our stadium Elgton Jenkins Jersey , I think, is awesome,” Bortles said. ”I think everyone realizes it’s your last chance. If you lose, you go home, it’s over.”
Here are some other things to know about Buffalo and Jacksonville:
STAR STATUS: Bills running back LeSean McCoy is questionable with a right ankle injury. McCoy said he was feeling ”a lot better” Thursday, but declined to make any guarantees about playing. McCoy accounts for nearly a third of Buffalo’s offense.
OLD FACE, NEW PLACE: Jaguars defensive tackle Marcell Dareus insists he harbors no ill will toward his former team. His actions might say otherwise. The 340-pound run-stopper will face the Bills for the first time since they traded him in October for a late-round draft pick.
MARRONE’S MAKEOVER: Jaguars coach Doug Marrone bolted on Buffalo in 2014, opting out of his contract and getting $4 million to walk away. Marrone landed in Jacksonville and will face Buffalo in his first playoff game as a head coach.
LONG TIME COMING: Jacksonville’s first home playoff game since January 2000 will be a packed house. The Jaguars sold every ticket available and even received permission to remove tarps covering four upper-deck sections to help satisfy demand.
The better J.A. Happ pitches for the Toronto Blue Jays Daniel Jones Jersey , the better the chance he finishes the season with another team.
Happ pitched a season-high 8 1/3 innings to win his fifth straight decision, Kendrys Morales hit a two-run home run and the Blue Jays beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 Wednesday for Toronto’s seventh win in eight home games.
Happ (9-3) allowed four runs and six hits, walked none and struck out eight. The veteran left-hander is the first big league pitcher to record four starts this season with at least eight strikeouts and no walks.
”He’s got good life on his fastball,” Atlanta’s Nick Markakis said. ”He’s always been a thorn in the side.”
With Toronto well behind in both the AL East and the wild card standings, Happ could be a candidate for a midseason trade to a contender.
”I know he’s in demand and I can see why,” Toronto manager John Gibbons said. ”If we were on the other end of it, I’d want him, too.”
Happ is in the final season of a three-year, $36 million contract.
”I signed to play here and try to help this team get to the playoffs,” Happ said. ”I know there may be rumors out there, but I like it here and my focus is here.”
Happ improved 4-0 with a 2.72 ERA in nine career starts against the Braves.
”We knew going in it was going to be a tough ride,” Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said.
Happ had retired 18 of 19 before Freddie Freeman and Markakis hit back-to-back singles with one out in the ninth.
Ryan Tepera came on and gave up an RBI single to Kurt Suzuki http://www.giantscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-dexter-lawrence-jersey , struck out Charlie Culberson, then allowed an RBI single to Ender Inciarte, putting the tying run at second. Tepera finished it by getting Johan Camargo to fly out, earning his fifth save in eight opportunities
Morales, who turned 35 Wednesday, went 2 for 3 and scored twice. He homered in the first, walked and scored in the fourth, singled in the fifth, and flied out in the eighth.
Suzuki and Peter Bourjos hit solo home runs for the Braves, who lost for the second time in eight games. Atlanta began the day with an NL-best record of 43-29.
Braves right-hander Anibal Sanchez (3-1) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings.
”It wasn’t bad, wasn’t great,” Snitker said. ”He kept us in the game Deandre Baker Jersey , gave us a chance.”
Sanchez is 0-2 with a 9.19 ERA in his past three starts against the Blue Jays.
After Morales hit a two-out drive off Sanchez, his sixth homer of the season, Suzuki connected in the second, his eighth, and Bourjos tied it in the third with his first homer of the season.
Toronto broke the deadlock in the fourth when Randal Grichuk hit an RBI double and Aledmys Diaz followed with a sacrifice fly.
Blue Jays infielder Yangervis Solarte made it 5-2 with a two-out RBI single off A.J. Minter in the seventh.
WALK THIS WAY
Blue Jays C Russell Martin has walked at least once in eight straight games, matching a career-long stretch. Martin, who walked twice Wednesday, also walked in eight straight in 2013.
BIRTHDAY BLASTS
Morales has four home runs and eight RBIs in eight career games on his birthday.
THRIVING WITH FIVE
Toronto is 28-1 when scoring five or more runs.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Braves: Markakis started at designated hitter, the first time this season he hasn’t played one of the corner outfield spots.
Blue Jays: RHP Marcus Stroman (shoulder) will be activated off the disabled list to start at the Angels on Saturday, Gibbons said. Stroman is 0-5 with a 7.71 ERA in seven starts. … 3B Josh Donaldson (left calf) left the team Wednesday and will continue working out at Toronto’s spring training facility in Florida. Donaldson will not begin a rehab assignment until he is able to run the bases at full speed.
UP NEXT

Blue Jays: RHP Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 4.35) starts the opener of a four-game series against the Angels. Sanchez is 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three June starts. LHP Tyler Skaggs (6-4 http://www.giantscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-oshane-ximines-jersey , 2.81) starts for Los Angeles.

PHOENIX — Arizona left fielder David Peralta reworked his swing in the offseason, moving his hands lower and closer to his body with an eye toward getting the ball into the air. It is taking off.
Peralta has 14 homers and 36 RBIs in 62 games, and he already has tied his career high in homers with more than half to season remaining. Along with Paul Goldschmidt, Peralta has helped the Diamondbacks (39-30) score a major league-high 99 runs in June after winning the first two games of a four-game series against the New York Mets.
Peralta had two hits to extend his hitting streak to seven games and scored a run in a 7-3 victory Friday. He had three homers in the first two games of the series, including his second career two-homer game Thursday.
Arizona will look to build on a 10-3 June when it sends left-hander Patrick Corbin to the mound to oppose Mets left-hander Steven Matz on Saturday. Matz, originally scheduled to start the series opener Thursday, was pushed back because of a blister issue.
The Mets are headed the other way. After opening the season 11-1, they have lost 12 of 13 to fall a season-low 10 games below .500 (28-38).
Peralta’s power improvement came as a result of discussions with hitting coaches Dave Magadan and Tim Laker and input from the Diamondbacks’ analytics department, which showed Peralta how often his hard-hit balls stayed on the ground.
“I made a little bit of change with my hands to try to elevate the fastball more,” said Peralta. “Why not put it in the air and see if it is going to better results? When I tried it in the beginning, it felt kind of weird.”
By the start of spring training, Peralta said he was feeling good with the new stroke. Either way Julian Love Jersey , he was determined to stay the course.
“I put it in my mind that it didn’t matter if I got into a slump, I was just going to keep doing it because you have to trust the process,” he said.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo liked what he saw of the new approach in spring training.
“It’s allowing him to get the barrel to the ball more frequently,” Lovullo said. “He’s just a good hitter. He’s focused so much on being a complete hitter, using the whole field. Now he’s picking his spots to drive the ball.”
While the Diamondbacks’ offense is rolling, the Mets have scored three runs or fewer in 11 straight games, the first time that has happened since 1981. They have lost six of their last seven series, splitting the other, and the best they can do in Arizona is another split after losing the first two games.
Dominic Smith, recalled at the start of the week, hit his first homer of the season Friday, which was the Mets’ 22nd homer in their last 20 games. Eighteen of those http://www.giantscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-darius-slayton-jersey , including Smith’s, have come with the bases empty.
“We need to go out there and score some runs. That’s simply stated,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters.
“We haven’t scored a ton and I think our hitters will. I think we have to get everybody in the right spot to start doing that. When we start scoring runs, we are going to win because our pitching has been tremendous.”
Corbin is 6-2 with a season-high 3.10 ERA after giving up five runs (four earned) in a no-decision against Pittsburgh on Monday. He has given up 12 runs (11 earned) in his last three outings, including a season-high six in a loss to Cincinnati on May 30.
He did not figure in the decision while giving up two runs in the Mets’ 5-4 victory at Citi Field on May 19. Corbin had one of his best starts of 2017 against the Mets, giving up one run and four hits in eight innings on Aug. 22. He is 1-3 with a 4.75 ERA in eight career appearances against the Mets.
Corbin ranks fourth in the NL with a 1.00 WHIP, and his 110 strikeouts are third.
Matz, 2-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 12 starts, faced the Diamondbacks on May 19. He gave up four runs in four innings but did not receive a decision when the Mets rallied for a 5-4 walk-off victory in the last of the ninth inning. He has no decisions in two career starts against Arizona, although he has given six runs and four homers in 10 innings. He has never pitched at Chase Field.
Being drafted Chuma Edoga Jersey , let alone selected as a first-round pick, should be one of the happiest days in the career of any National Football League player. In many cases, these athletes dedicate years, and maybe even a decade, of their lives to pursuing their dreams of playing in the NFL. They sacrifice personal relationships, free time and parts of the college experience all to be taken in an NFL Draft class, and receiving phone calls from pro teams during a draft makes it all worth while. Of course http://www.jetscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-trevon-wesco-jersey , not everybody who is taken in the first round of a draft becomes a superstar who signs multiple contracts, wins Super Bowl titles and personal honors and is remembered as one of his club’s best picks. In fact, some analysts and journalists may say that it is more likely any player will turn out to be one of the biggest busts of his given draft class than somebody who is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Hurdles and setbacks such as injuries, rosters lacking talent and other issues often prevent prospects from reaching what is thought to be high ceilings. Others merely don’t have what it takes to excel at the highest level. The NFL has a long history of draft busts who turned out to be massive flops and won nothing of note before they were unceremoniously bounced from the league. Quarterback Johnny Manziel may be viewed as one of the biggest busts in recent memory, but all would do well to remember that he isn’t even the top bust from that year’s draft class thanks to cornerback Justin Gilbert seemingly showing little interest in playing in the league during his stint in the NFL. Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell and Akili Smith are three other examples of busts who never became true CEOs of offenses while playing under center in the NFL. Most analysts would agree that it takes at least three seasons to adequately grade any NFL draft class, and that makes predicting the 15 biggest busts of the 2018 NFL Draft less than a month after those players were selected by their current teams a difficult Clelin Ferrell Jersey , if not impossible, task. We can only guess and imagine what difficulties each of these players will face, and how they will handle any and all roadblocks. Pressure makes diamonds in some instances, but it also completely crushes careers for those unable to perform as well as advertised. The National Football League offseason is one of the most chaotic times in sports as there are so many moving pieces going on while teams try to improve their rosters heading into the next league year. Every off-season we see teams surprisingly release star players in an effort to save money or to begin rebuilding for the future, and then it becomes a race to see which Super Bowl hungry team is able to acquire the available star players. There are also major trades that go down in the off-season that not even NFL experts and insiders can predict or see coming. Lastly, the draft and free agency also shake up rosters to the point that it's impossible to predict what each team will look like next season. But the 2019 NFL offseason could be an especially intriguing one as there will be many teams entering a rebuilding mode, while there will also be a handful of teams ready to risk it all in order to obtain that last piece for their championship hopes. In all http://www.raiderscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-josh-jacobs-jersey , this should be an explosive and exciting offseason to say the least. Given the drama that will unfold in a few short months, this article takes a look at some of the biggest names that could be on the move and projects where they might land. These are very bold predictions to be making at this point of the year, but for many of them they seem like they could be spot on. So sit back, take a deep breath, and get excited as you read about which star player will be joining your team in 2019.
For very young or relatively new football fans http://www.panthersfootballauthentic.com/greg-little-jersey-authentic , the idea of a choreographed touchdown celebration is a foreign idea that befuddles the mind - players celebrating in dance, all in unison or busting a move that was practiced and well thought out?Preposterous! Throw a flag! Unsportsmanlike conduct!I would hope for your sake that, first of all, you don't watch football with these "negative nellies," because that could very easily ruin your football watching Sunday. Second of all, I would hope that you've at least tried to indulge said individuals in a couple of YouTube videos depicting celebrations from an era where a touchdown shimmy was expected, and not penalized. The art of the touchdown dance is slowly turning into a NFL artifact, relegated to those few instances of a Victor Cruz salsa dance or (until this season) a well-executed field-goal post dunk by Jimmy Graham. The No Fun League National Football League decided that celebrating was disrespectful and equivalent to taunting. While there is a line that shouldn't be crossed when celebrating a touchdown, no other sport blows the whistle as quickly as the NFL on "the line being crossed" during the post-score rejoicing.Years ago, though, we were lucky enough to bear witness to the "Golden Age" of touchdown celebrations. Choreographed or spontaneous Will Grier Jersey , the dances were fun, exciting, and added flair and passion to America's favorite sport. From team dances to individual efforts, using props, fans, and anything else players could get their hands on, the touchdown dance was, quite simply put, part of the game. Kids looking up to NFL athletes not only admired their playing talent, but also their ability to razzle and dazzle after a big touchdown. And so, while we don't get to appreciate them to the fullest extent these days - thanks http://www.panthersfootballauthentic.com/christian-miller-jersey-authentic , Roger - we can still remember fondly some of the greatest touchdown celebration artists in the history of football. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — While Jimmy Garoppolo recovered from a torn left ACL, his backups took center stage during the 49ers‘ minicamp. The 49ers coaching staff allowed Garoppolo to participate in seven-on-seven passing drills but not 11-on-11 team drills. So backup quarterbacks C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens split time with the starters. Those two are competing to be the 49ers’ No. 2 quarterback behind Garoppolo next season. Of the two, Beathard has played particularly well this offseason, said coach Kyle Shanahan.“C.J. has had a hell of a camp,” Shanahan said Wednesday. “You can’t fully know how much better he has gotten until game time when you know they can tackle him, but C.J. has gotten more and more comfortable, more automatic. He knew the offense right when he got here and now, in his third year, he has a lot more reps than he did last year.”Beathard started five games in 2018 after Garoppolo tore his ACL against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 23. In five starts, Beathard threw eight touchdown passes Jordan Scarlett Jersey , seven interceptions, passed for 1,252 yards, posted a quarterback rating of 81.8 and lost all five games. During his fifth start, an 18-15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Beathard injured his right wrist and did not play the rest of the season. The 49ers traded up to take Beathard in the third round of the 2017 draft. Through two seasons in the NFL, he is 1-9 and his passer rating is 74.6.Beathard said he believes the quarterback competition during minicamp has brought out the best in him. “I really do,” he said. “Anytime you have competition, especially from good players, it makes you better.”Mullens has responded to the challenge, too.“The biggest thing is just playing decisive football David Montgomery Jersey ,” Mullens said. “How quickly can you make your decisions? How quickly can you skip a read to get to the next read because you know it’s going to be open? That’s one thing that helps me play my best. Throughout camp, I’ve just tried to be quick on my decisions, and I think it has helped.”Mullens signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and became their starting quarterback after Beathard injured his wrist in 2018. Mullens started the final eight games of the season, passing for 2,277 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He posted a quarterback rating of 90.8.Of all the quarterbacks who have started 16 or fewer games in the NFL, only Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield — the first pick of the 2018 draft — had a higher passer rating than Mullens last season. Mayfield’s rating was 93.7.“(Mullens and Beathard) have both proven they can play in this league,” Shanahan said. “We’re going to have to make a tough decision at the end of preseason to which one we want to give that No. 2 job. You don’t get to compete much during the season. There’s not enough reps. You hope Jimmy stays healthy so it’s irrelevant who’s the No. 2 guy. But the No. 2 guy does get a lot more reps in practice (than the No. 3 guy), so that’s going be very important for them.”The 49ers expect to keep all three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster for the regular season. So the competition may continue after training camp.Beathard and Mullens like competing against each other. They even golf together every weekend.“A little weekly tradition,” Mullens said. “We’re always having fun. Competition is fun.”
